Great Communion - Oct. 4th
2009 is the 200th anniversary of our call for Christian unity. In his "Declaration and Address" (written in 1809), Thomas Campbell said that the Church in the whole world is united...it is One. 100 years ago, our ancestors celebrated Campbell's call for unity with a Great Communion service. Our dream is that on Sunday, October 4, 2009, congregations all across the United States...and all around the world...will meet together and celebrate Communion and remember our common heritage.
Several years ago the Board of Trustees of Disciples of Christ Historical Society looked toward 2009 and realized that we did not want to miss the opportunity to mark the bicentennial of Thomas Campbell’s “Declaration and Address.” While there are other events and documents that we have also remembered, everyone agreed that this 1809 document truly formed the constitution for our movement. Its thesis is “the church of Christ upon earth is essentially, intentionally, and constitutionally one.” It is the clarion call for unity that has been the hallmark of the Stone-Campbell movement.

CCSW GA Reception a Success
Last night folks who have traveled all the way from the Southwest gathered for a big party in Indianapolis! With cake, fruit and veggies and cheese in one hand, lemonade in the other - we saw friends and colleagues from our own areas and from across the region. With such a big region - its always fun for us to be in the same room together - face to face! Other GA attenders who wanted to catch up with their SW friends knew where to find us and dropped in. There were also pastors networking, exploring possibilities for pastoring churches in the Southwest.
Dani welcomed us and told the group our Wii dancing of the morning. She and all of us area ministers were weargin our bowling shirts for the occasion. We may have to make those shirts part of every gathering!??? There are pictures on www.disciplesworld.com of our Wii dancing escpades. Maybe Bill Anderton will figure out how to connect to them from our ccsw and area websites? (I did; see below ;-)
Time at the computer is only very early morning or late at night - maybe I'll report some more serious news next time.... but I am finding Twitter - don't make fun! - a useful tool communicating brief updates to my TRA folks back at home - anyone can listen in though. I hope everyone is also making use of reports and even live streaming video of GA.... this is definitely a new way of doing assembly!

2009 General Assembly Explored Wholeness for All
Disciples from all walks of life gathered in Indianapolis starting Wednesday, July 29 and continuing to Sunday, August 2, 2009 for the church’s biennial Assembly. Attendees came from across the United States and Canada – and in many cases from around the world – to worship, learn, fellowship and discuss the future of our Church. The 2009 General Assembly centered its work around Revelation 22:2 …“And the leaves of the trees shall be for the healing of the nations.” In choosing this verse as the centerpiece and guiding scriptural reference, organizers seek to complement the Disciples’ new identity statement (We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world) with a theme of relevance, energy, conviction – and healing.
