Exploring a Congo Disciple Partnership and TRA Think Tank - August 12-13

partnership_with_congo_250w.jpgAn exciting weekend will soon be upon us – and I hope you’ve thought about being a part of it!  We have not had a traditional Area Assembly in a couple of years.  That model of gathering was not working very well for us any more, as the attendance decline demonstrated.  So it’s been a while since we’ve been together as an Area.  The weekend of August 12-13 will be a chance to be together at First Christian Church, Ruidoso, as an Area for some important ministry and mission conversations – as well as some good ol’ fellowship around the table!!

We have an opportunity on Friday evening, August 12, 6:00 – 9:00 PM to hear Rev. David Owen, of DOC Global Ministries, share stories and pictures about the possibilities of a new and exciting relationship for our Area.  We are considering entering into a covenant of partnership with the Hi Plains Area and a District of the  Community of the Disciples of Christ in Congo, to expand the ecumenical and missionary horizons of our local churches in our Areas and the District Disciples in the Congo, to assume responsibilities one for the other, and to learn reciprocally from each other’s faith.  In other words – be church together with some new friends!

And then on Saturday, August 13, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM, we will be led by Revs. Val Isenhower and Judith Todd, of Water in the Desert Ministries, in a time of re-thinking and re-visioning of our Area ministries for a new day.

Dinner will be served on Friday night and lunch will be served on Saturday.  Anyone in the Area can attend both Friday night and Saturday or just Friday night, or just Saturday.  The office at First Christian can recommend overnight lodging, if you wish.  And if you’re available for the whole weekend, I’m sure FCC, Ruidoso would welcome you on Sunday Morning for worship with them!  Please RSVP to the church office at FCC, Ruidoso.

RSVP to FCC, Ruidoso, 575-258-4250.

The Hi-Plains and Tres Rios Areas of the Christian Church (DOC) in the Southwest are cooperating this year to bring an excellent series of continuing education and nurture events to our clergy and lay leaders. All HPA and TRA clergy (ordained, licensed/commissioned) and lay leaders are welcome to attend any or all events. Note that participation in these events meets the educational requirements for the licensed/commissioned ministers of both Areas. Participants may get more information and register on-line at the link below.

To the TRA Board Members

You will find below and in the link to the PDF document the information for our annual Board Retreat, January 14-15, 2011 at FCC, Odessa, TX. This year we will have the special guidance of friend to the Area Rev. David Digby, who has experience in transformational ministry and experience in guiding groups on their own path to new and vital ministry together.

We are also inviting the boards of our neighboring areas, most specifically the Hi Plains Area and the Central Area to participate with us.  We’ll be able to work together with our own board during the workshop session times, but also have the opportunity to mingle and get acquainted with board members from other CCSW Area Boards.  Every Area in the region is being invited.

We will have our own business meeting at 8:00 AM Saturday morning, at FCC Odessa, with breakfast provided.  I will be sending board minutes from the last meeting and financial reports for your review next week.

You will not be required to pay the $50 registration fee, but if you or your church is able to donate some toward the speaker cost and the meals, over and above the cost of your travel, it will be most appreciated.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call me or drop me an e-mail!

Blessings,

Charlotte

Licensed Ministers of the Year Award

There will be new award to be given during TCU Ministers Week to honor Licensed Ministers in the TRA.  Licensed Ministers are a dedicated group of clergy who serve our churches.  They study and come together several times a year to consider and work to improve their ministry.  Many of them also serve the community in other careers – in teaching, counseling, law enforcement, business, and other ways.  We hope to honor all Licensed Ministers at special dinner at TCU Ministers Week in February, as well a present these awards.

If you would please share this news with your congregation members, encouraging them to nominate a Licensed Minister they know and love!  Please consider the ministry of one of your Licensed colleagues and share that good news with us!

It’s not too late to be a part of the exciting mission Beans and Rice Mission on our TRA Border with Mexico – please consider sharing the stories we sent earlier this year, the story of our success and pictures of our collections attached to this e-mail – and join us in making a difference!  I hope you will set aside a particular Sunday for receiving donations, or plan a special fund-raising project for our TRA Beans & Rice.  Every contribution, no matter how large or small will feed families in Mexico!

FCC El Paso has scheduled a Beans & Rice Benefit Concert for Sunday afternoon, Oct 17, 4 pm to 6 pm. A local musical artist will be performing and coffee and dessert will be provided to attendees. Wilshire Baptist Church of Dallas became aware of the project, adopted the project and has challenged its membership to provide Beans & Rice.

Boarder Cluster Pancake Dinner, February 16, 2010

In place of the normal 5th Tuesday Dinner with the Border Cluster churches, First Christian Alamogordo will be hosting a Pancake Feast and Shrove Tuesday worship service. Ancient tradition prohibited eating milk, fat, eggs, or meat during Lent, so Christians used up whatever stores they might have the night before by making pancakes. Shrove Tuesday developed as a day of confession so that Christians could enter Lent with a clean heart.
