New Site for Junior Camp

This summer we are once again trying out a new venue for our Junior campers. We do this in an effort to provide the best setting for this most active age group. Fort Lone Tree near Capitan, NM specializes in providing outdoor ministry to elementary age youth. Some of the activities - supervised by the Fort Lone Tree's trained staff includes - waterslide, horses, rock wall, zip line, archery, obstacle course and more. There is a Thursday afternoon Rodeo for the kids to enjoy and a Friday Family night - in which families are invited to attend, enjoy supper and the evening's skit night, before taking campers home on Saturday morning. Our TRA volunteer counseling staff - ministers and laypeople from our TRA churches - lead the Bible study, worship and devotion times and are the "bunkhouse" counselors. Please visit the Fort Lone Tree website to see more for yourself - http://lonetree.org/folders.asp?action=display&record=3

2010 Camp Theme - "Be A Hero, Living Like Jesus"

Be_a_Hero_pic.jpgIn the New Beginnings, Junior and Chi Rho camps we continue to use the same specialized outdoor ministry curriculum, published by our own Disciples of Christ/Christian Board of Publication and New Earth Publishers, a cooperative group of denominational publishers including the Disciples of Christ. To "Be a Hero" for God means recognizing a need, realizing that something can be done to address that need, and taking the risk to act. Each day campers will hear a story of a biblical hero who followed God in a brave and amazing way. God's heroes act in ways big and small as they welcome, befriend, and include others, as they give, rejoice, and share the good news. Campers will learn that they can live like Jesus in simple ways, with everyday things as ordinary people. Campers will leave camp ready to use their courage and faith to "Be a Hero" for God.

New Beginnings and Chi Rho Camp are held at Black River Center for Learning - http://www.brcl.org

Directors for those camps are:

New Beginnings:
Rev. Leslie Denton
Member West Mesa Christian Church, Albuquerque, NM

Chi Rho:
Chris Henry
Longtime TRA camper and counselor, Hobbs, NM

Eighters' Camp - "Created To Be Me"

As has been true for many summers now, we cooperate with the Hi Plains and Central Areas of the CCSW in providing our special camp for 8th graders, Created To Be Me, with the keynote theme of "Spirituality and Sexuality", developed by Rev. Linda Goddard, a Christian Sexuality Education Minister and CLER Ministries. Check out this parent information web site for more about this camp experience - http://clerministries.org/camp_programs/campprogramsindex.htm

This summer Eighters' Camp will be held in the Central Area at Lake Brownwood Retreat Center http://www.lbcr.org/welcome_to_lbcr

Rev. Keith Lewis
Pastor for Youth Ministries, United Church of Los Alamos, NM

CYF Conference - "Go"

Our CYF camp is planned by the Area Youth Council and a team of experienced CYF camp directors including:

Rev. Michelle Tatlock
Chaplain with UNM Hospitals in Albuquerque, NM

Rev. Bob Aubrey
Minister to Youth and Young Adults, Monte Vista Christian Church, Albuquerque, NM

Kevin Zink
Longtime TRA CYF counselor and director from Carlsbad, NM

2010 CYF Conference Director:
Mary Cooley
Member, Monte Vista Christian Church, Albuquerque, NM

The 2010 theme for camp is "GO", following Fall Fiesta's "On Your Mark" and Midwinter's "Get Set". We will be talking about our personal belief statements and deciding how we define our faith. We will have many different activities going on because many of our counselors have interesting hobbies, from artwork to taking lessons from a black belt karate expert. We are planning on having morning jogs, yoga, and of course canoeing. We will have campfires, stargazing, and fun events like late night swims.

Jim Baird, Disciple and retired Director of Educational Programming at Ghost Ranch, is keynoter and using material from the book Altars in the World, by Barbara Brown Taylor.

AND...CYF Conference is offering a "Bring a Friend" Special! If a CYF camper registers a friend that has never been to TRA CYF Conference before - that camper or that friend can deduct $100 from their registration fee. Look for special instructions in the registration packet!

CYF Conference is held at Black River Center for Learning http://www.brcl.org/

We Need Camp Counselors and Youth Stewards!!

We are still in the middle of camp counselor and youth steward recruiting season and we need adult and youth leaders from all churches that send campers.

Yes! Youth who have completed 10th or 11th grade can volunteer to be a youth steward at Chi Rho, Junior or New Beginnings camp!!

This year the TRA Board has approved a policy of requesting one adult counselor to participate in our camping program per every 1-5 campers sent by any church. If your church sends 1-5 campers to any of our camps, we need at least one adult counselor to participate in any one of our camps. If a church sends more campers, we need one adult counselor to participate for every 5 campers sent to our programs. The counselor(s) from your church do not need to participate in the camp your campers are attending, but in any one of our camps.

We most need new counselors for Eighters', Chi Rho and Junior camps!!
